It is more hydrating and prepares the skin for the following steps. In response to your question, essence is not the same as a serum, but a lighter and more hydrating product. It is perfectly fine to use both in the same routine, but start cautiously if your skin is sensitive. Results on pigmentation, if you are looking for this, can take several weeks to see. Excellent set for the price. I can't say much about the serum's effectiveness yet, as I've only been using it for a couple of weeks. But plus points for the nice packaging and the pleasantness of the texture. It hasn't irritated or dried out my skin. What I mean is that when you use the mask for the first time (maybe you like it and buy more), you should feel how long you can keep it on, as not all skin types can handle these masks that need to be on for several hours, and some even overnight (my skin can't do that).
